DIY Advent Calendar

I love doing this for my kids every year, it just brings an extra touch of magic and for kids paces out the lonnnng month of December with lots of entertain/fun.

Each envelope has a note inside with an idea or message. It also can give the Elf a daily task and hopefully gives the kids a bit of the real meaning of Christmas especially the ones like donating to the food bank. It's so easy to do too.

You will need:

I got the following from Poundland and the numbers from Hobbycraft.

24 envelopes.
24 pegs.
String or ribbon.
Drawing pins.
Tape measure can help.
Stickers optional.
Use of a printer - If you don't have great handwriting like me.
A place to hang them.

NO SPACE? - if you don't have a space to put them what about tying the string long ways to a decorated coat hanger and it can be hung on the front of a door for minimal space.

1. Label the envelopes 1- 24. I much prefer the sticker numbers - I find online best or you can write the numbers on. I also like to put a few Christmas stickers or decoration's on them.

2. Pick how many lines of ribbon you want. I like 3 with 8 envelopes on each. Measure them out and pin them on the wall.

TIP: Start with the top line first and hang the envelopes even if they are not ready as it will give you a better idea. The string will look totally different with the envelopes on and hang lower. Then you can add the next line and so on. These aren't measured evenly I just did it by eye and what looked best.

3. Pick 24 tasks of your choice. BELOW are some examples of the ones I use. Either write them out or print them off and cut out.

4. Get out your diary out and decide which day will suit what. I always do the first day as "Toy donation" and the last day as Polar Express Breakfast. I then fill the gaps and co-ordinate our Pantomime tickets or whoever has their School Christmas party that day. Then fill each envelope with a note. Clearly this year will be very different so putting all things in that Lockdown cant effect should it be extended.

Tip: Make a note of which one you have put in each envelope though so you know what's happening. The first year I didn't and had to open them panicked at 11pm one night!

NOTE - IF YOU ARE IN A BLENDED FAMILY LIKE US AND YOUR KIDS ARE AWAY FOR A NIGHT OR WEEKEND IT'S TRICKY BUT I JUST PUT THE REALLY FUN THINGS ON NIGHT'S I KNOW WE ARE ALL TOGETHER. ON THE DAY THEY ARE NOT HERE, IT'S JUST THE GIRLS I TRY TO PICK SOMETHING THEY WOULD LIKE OR SIMPLY PUT A NICE MESSAGE IN LIKE "MAKE A WISH FOR SOMEONE" THEN NO ONE FEELS LEFT OUT.
